The excitement around recent advances is attracting growing interest and large sums of cash from a welter of researchers, big tech companies and investors, even if the quantum leap in funding has not quite arrived.

"We want to be able to provide labor to the world, not just for one thing, but for everybody who needs it," Rose said.

Toyota’s newly announced research partnership with one of the world-leaders in hardware, Boston Dynamics, aims to take this a step further — developing whole-body behaviour models for some of the world’s most advanced humanoids.

Boston Dynamics bade farewell earlier this year to Atlas. A video montage showed the machine doing backflips and long leaps, but also falling off a platform and rolling uncontrollably down a grassy slope.

“It suggests that if we are able to scale things up further, then we might be able to make significant breakthroughs in allowing robots to be successful in real world environments.”

So we wondered what would happen if we were to tap into the worldwide community of gamers and use their skills in new ways. With a robot working inside the deep freezer room, or in a standard manufacturing or warehouse facility, remote operators could remain on call, waiting for it to ask for assistance if it made Robots to come an error, got stuck, or otherwise found itself incapable of completing a task.

Pepper, as a result, was welcomed by his human colleagues, who have now grown used to the robot's presence, and even created personal reactions for it to say when their name is given by a visitor.

As any telegraph operator or steam engineer might tell you, progress waits for no one. The robots are here, and technological advances are bringing them closer every day to the AI-powered automatons of the silver screen.

“We’ve been seeing more data be available, including data for very dexterous tasks — and seeing a lot of the fruits of putting that data in,” says Stanford’s Finn.

“The intention is not to start from the beginning and say, ‘Hey, we’re trying to make a robot look like a person,’” said Jonathan Hurst, co-founder and chief robot officer at Agility Robotics. “We’re trying to make robots that can operate in human spaces.”

The diffusion model then removes each of these random trajectories until it has a clear path that can be followed by the robot.
